COPAPHIL was founded in July 1983, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Simon Bolivar, the liberator of Colombia and its first president. It has been APS Affiliate #142 since August 1985. The purpose of the organization is to promote the philately of
Colombia and Panama.
Benefits of Membership:
- The quarterly journal, COPACARTA, , that includes original research as well
as translations of articles published in foreign language journals and reprints of
articles of interest from older publications. It is sent to all overseas members by
airmail. An index of Volumes 11-20 was recently distributed free to members.
Past issues are available on disk for $20+$2 postage in the USA and $3 for foreign

- A library that has the largest existing collection of references relating
to the philately of Colombia and Panama. In 2008 the COPAPHIL Library was donated to the
American Philatelic Research Library.
- Specialized handbooks free or at reduced cost to members. Our first is a
Philatelic Bibliography for Colombia and Panama. It was distributed
free to all members in 2001.
The second is a Handbook of Panama Postal Markings through 1950. It
was published in 2003 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the first Panama
State postage stamp and the 100th anniversary of the Independence of Panama.
It was offered to members at a greatly reduced cost. A new edition is in preparation.
From time to time copies of publications by others are made available
at a special member's price.
- Mail bid sales of specialized material. Only members may consign material to the sales,
but all collectors may bid in these sales. The current commission for consignors is 10%. There
is no buyer's commission. Proceeds go to the publication fund used to publish
specialized handbooks.
- Study circles to promote research and permit members to communicate with
others sharing a common interest. Current study circles are listed on the
application form. Study circle members contribute to ongoing research. Completed
results of such research are published in COPACARTA for the benefit of all
members.
- Members may place a free ad once a year in our journal.
- A web site www.copaphil.org with links
to useful references and an e-mail list for notification of time-dated news
of interest.
Annual dues are $13.00 for members with mailing addresses in the United States or
Canada and $18.00 for members in other parts of the world. Overseas applicants
may pay in US dollars with a credit card via Paypal to copaphilusa@aol.com
adding a Paypal fee of $1 to pay dues for one year or $2 to pay dues for 2 or 3
years. The membership
year is from July 1 through June 30. Members joining during the year receive
all of the back issues of COPACARTA for the year in which they join. Members
are invited to make contributions to our publication fund; those making a
contribution of at least $5.00 per year are recognized as contributing members.
